Student Competitions

A student paper may only be submitted to one student competition at the conference. The submission will be disqualified if the same paper is also submitted to another competition organized by a different EMI technical committee at the conference.

EMI Computational Mechanics Committee Student Poster Competition

Purpose:

  • Encourage student involvement in Computational Mechanics fields within EMI.
  • Expose students to Computational Mechanics research of other groups.
  • Facilitate student interactions with faculty and other students to build up strong networking and be ready to take on future responsibilities within the technical community.
  • Improve their technical writing and presentation skill, as well as to promote high-quality submissions to the flagship journal of EMI, the Journal of Engineering Mechanics.

Deadline:

  • January 31, 2023 – Abstract submission deadline

EMI Dynamics Committee Student Paper Competition

The Dynamics Committee (DC) of ASCE-EMI is pleased to announce the 9th Annual Student Paper Competition in Dynamics. The competition is open to any student author of a contribution to the EMI 2023 conference developing and/or applying Dynamics methods to engineering problems. Students whose abstracts in this thematic area are accepted by the Conference, and retain their student status by April 1st 2023, are eligible for this paper competition.

EMI Elasticity Committee Student Paper Competition

The competition is open to full-time students that submit an abstract as the leading author in the thematic area of elasticity to the EMI abstract submission website by the conference deadline. Submission to an Elasticity sponsored mini-symposium is encouraged but not required.

Deadlines:

  • January 31, 2023 – Abstract submission deadline.
  • March 1, 2023 – Express interest to participate in the elasticity student paper competition.
  • April 28, 2023 – Full‐length (three-page) paper and abstract acceptance notification.

EMI Fluid Dynamics Committee Student Paper Competition

The ASCE EMI-Fluid Dynamics Committee is pleased to announce the Annual Student Paper Competition in the general areas related to fluid dynamics.

Applicants should be a student at the time of submission and be the lead author of an abstract in an area related to fluid dynamics, submitted for presentation at the 2023 EMI conference.  Applicants are encouraged to submit their abstract to one of the Fluid Dynamics sponsored mini-symposia (e.g., MS501, MS502, MS608, and MS612).

EMI Granular Materials Committee Student Video Competition

The Granular Materials Technical Committee (GMTC) is hosting its second annual video competition for graduate students to present their research findings (experimental, computational, and theoretical studies) within the broad field of granular materials.  As nearly every product, commodity, or infrastructure is constituted from, derived from, or supported by particulate materials through mining, agriculture, and/or chemical processing, the competition spans the engineering disciplines, applied mathematics, materials science and physics.

The EMI Modeling lnelasticity & Multiscale Behavior (MIMB) Committee is pleased to announce the 8th Annual Student Paper Competition.

EMI Objective Resilience Committee Student Paper Competition

The Objective Resilience Committee is hosting its fifth annual student competition for graduate students to present their research findings within the broad field of structure, infrastructure, and community resilience. The competition spans different types of structures and infrastructure systems under suite of different single or multiple hazards and involves advanced techniques to model the mechanical characteristics of the built environment under hazards, AI-enabled techniques to assess resilience of large-scale structures and infrastructure systems, and optimization techniques to improve resilience of infrastructure and communities.

The competition is held to encourage student involvement in Poromechanics and expose students to Poromechanics research from different groups. Promote diversity among the EMI poromechanics community.
